On Sunday, October 15, 2023, a blind group of professors, staff, and Ph.D. students of the Ratchsuda Institute, the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, participated in the International White Cane Safety Day organized by the Thailand Association of the Blind. The activity aims to encourage global society to recognize and promote the potential of the blind and visually impaired people. The white cane is a symbol for the blind and persons with visual impairment around the world. The day symbolized the expression of 'freedom' for all visually impaired people. In 2013, the White Cane Journey began at Santiphap Park (Park of Peace) in central Bangkok, walking to the Victory Monument BTS Station, taking the BTS to Mo Chit and going to the underground MRT at Chatuchak. Then, they took the subway to Phahonyothin for check-in according to the activity. After that, they went by subway to Sukhumvit, and changed to the BTS heading to the Victory Monument for a gathering at the Bangkok School for the Blind located nearby as the activity’s destination.

Back to history, President Lyndon B. Johnson's announcement after World War II in 1964 that October 15th of every year was called White Cane Safety Day leading to the subject necessary for blind and visually impaired people which is the course named “Orientation & Mobility (O&M)” that Dr. Richard E. Hoover initiated and developed to prevent hitting obstacles ahead of the blind and to indicate the nature of the surface on walking.

Activities happening today helped raising awareness in society, encouraging persons with disabilities to go out and live their lives. More accessibility, and variety of transportation starting to increase. The fact that the general public sees the group carrying a walking stick, more persons with disabilities go out. This is special as supporting them to have more opportunities in society as well.

Ms. Nuchanat Todee, Head of Blind and Low Vision Academic Service, Rachasuda Institute Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital was interviewed by Thisable Me website, which covers issues concerning disability, society, politics, art and culture and living:“When carrying a walking stick outside, Don't look down on yourself or pity yourself. Why do I have to be like this? Instead, think about the fact that we carry the cane out, giving other people strength. Holding this view rather than worrying if going out would be a burden to others” Nuchanat said.
