The Medical Elective and Short Course Training program is meant to give additional clinical experience and training to qualified applicants who are in the period of Elective or Short Course Training rotation according to their university syllabus.
Training is conducted on an individual basis for five days a week. Applicants take part in daily departmental activities such as supervised ward rounds, bedside instruction, OPD sessions, seminars, and conferences. Observation of most professional activities is also included. However, practical hands-on training is prohibited due to the Thai Medical Board's rules and regulations.

- Elective and short course training duration per candidate must be at least 2 weeks long per elective in each department or division.
- One or more departments and divisions can be chosen for electives. For example, if one were to take two electives consecutively, they would spend a minimum total of four weeks in the Faculty of Medicine.
- Each elective program round opens on every first and third Monday of each month, except throughout April. Specific exceptions are made for Emergency Medicine programs.
Thai Education Visa Information
Non-Immigrant Visa "ED" (Education) is the type of visa issued to applicants who wish to study, attend seminars, undergo training, or an internship in Thailand.
All individuals who wish to apply for elective, clerkship, or rotation with Ramathibodi must apply for an ED visa through valid institutions such as the Thai Embassy or Thai Consulate-General to issue legal travel and stay permissions.
The Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital is not responsible for any lapses in process in visa approval, and is by no means any representative or liaison of the Thai Office of the Immigration Bureau and its agents or partners. The information on this page serves as a point of general information for those who are considering to apply for clerkship at Ramathibodi.
The validity of the ED visa is 90 days.
Applying for a Thai ED Visa from Abroad
Documents Required for ED Visa Application
All visa applicants must have ALL documents ready for the Thai ED visa application:
- Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months
- Complete Visa Application Form
- Recent (4 x 6 cm.) photograph of the applicant
- Recommendation letter addressed to the Consulate
- Letter of acceptance from the concerned academic institute/organisation
- Academic record and Student ID (if currently studying)
- For those wishing to attend seminar, or training session, or internship, a formal letter confirming participation status of the applicant from the concerned organisation addressed to the Consulate is also required
Consular officers reserve the rights to request additional documents as deemed necessary.

Period of Stay
The holder of this type of visa is entitled to stay in Thailand for a maximum period of 90 days. He or she may apply for an extension of stay at the Office of the Immigration Bureau and may be granted such extension for a period of one year from the date of first entry into Thailand.

Reporting of Foreign Residence
The Immigration Bureau must be informed when a foreigner resides with or rents the property of a Thai citizen.

The owner of the house must inform the Immigration Office. In the case that an immigration office is not in the area, inform the local police station. |
Reporting Procedures
- Authorities must be informed within 24 hours of resident occupancy.
- The above procedures may be done by mail.

All foreigners who will stay in Thailand longer than 90 days must complete the following requirements:
- Report to the Immigration Bureau in person to register your address. If you have stayed longer than 90 days without registering. you will need to report and pay a fine according to circumstance. If you have not stayed longer than 90 days, you may designate an appointee to register for you. Required materials are your passport and the TM. 47 Application Form.
- Report your address every 90 days thereafter to the Immigration Bureau which can be done by an appointee.
- If you have stayed in Thailand over 90 days without registering you should report to the Immigration Bureau to register. The fine as of 2014 for voluntarily reporting residence as a Foreigner after the 90 days limit is 2,000 baht.
Procedures for Lost Passport
A foreigner whose passport is either lost or stolen after entering the Kingdom must do the following:
- File a report at the local police station in the area where the passport was lost or stolen.
- Bring the police report to your embassy or consulate and apply for a new passport or substitute document. If there is no embassy or consulate in Thailand, please contact the Passport Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
