CT Colonography

Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer and is usually one that is slow-progressing and most associated with increasing age.

There are several factors that can contribute to the onset of colorectal cancer such as:

  1. Genetics abnormalities, be it inherited or acquired, as a factor in inducing abnormal colorectal inflammation and eventual formation of nodules on the inner surface of the colon (polyp) which could later develop into cancer.
  2. Food and eating behavior. Researches have shown that over-consumption of high fat diet as well as under-consumption of fiber can elevate the risk of cancer development. Studies have revealed that eating fruits and vegetables can lower the risk of developing such cancer compared to those that do not.
  3. Exercise and diet control is also an integral part in reducing the risk.
  4. Consumption of alcoholic beverages could elevate the risk.
  5. Smoking could increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

   Symptoms of colorectal cancer includes:

  • An abnormal interval of constipation and diarrhea.
  • Stool displays mucuosy texture with tinges of red or with blood or even charcoal-black hue.
  • Pain during taking a poop
  • Extreme stomachache
  • Unexplained nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and paleness
  • Palpable mass

If suspicion arises, one should consult physicians in one of the following department: Gastroenterology and Hepatology Internal Medicine or Premium Clinic at Ramathibodi Hospital for possible further assessment such as fecal sample analysis, endoscopy, or x-ray.  Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center (AIMC) introduces CT Colonoscopy as a method of assessment. The 3-dimensional reconstruction of the internal structure using CT scan allows for enhanced diagnostic accuracy. Furthermore, this non-invasive technique could possibly allow radiologists to pinpoint other abnormalities located in the neighboring legions without the use of sedation methods. Physicians can refer patient for CT Colonoscopy at AIMC by filling in the request form available at https://med.mahidol.ac.th/aimc
