4. The Program’s Philosophy and Objectives

Program Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy program in Clinical Epidemiology will prepare students to integrate clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical economics, and clinical research with patient care. The Program will focus on a critical evaluation of diagnostics, prevention and management, which are the basic principles of evidence-based medicine. It will provide students with a broad perspective and advanced skills for in-depth exploration of research methodology. Students will be challenged to create innovative research and evaluation methods, which will lead to not only an improved understanding of health and disease, but ultimately toward an overall contribution to  enhanced health service systems as well.

Program Objectives

a.     Appropriately teach, advise and disseminate the principles of Clinical Epidemiology while assiduously aspiring to help in the reduction of the world disease burden.

b.    Encourage and effectively integrate Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine into the everyday practice of individual patient care as well as the broader based health care systems.

  1. Produce good clinical research using Clinical Epidemiologic tools, while further advancing ongoing medical education of the highest ethical standards in Clinical Epidemiology.

5. Admission Requirements

Plan I (Research only)

  • Candidate must hold a Doctoral degree in Medicine and have graduated with a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Economics, Health Financial Management, Health Services Research and Policy Administration, or Public Health.
  • Candidate must have at least 3-5 years of medical research experience.
  • Candidtate must have published research in international journals which are cited in index-medicus.

Plan II (Coursework and Research)

  • Candidate must hold a Doctoral degree in Medicine.
  • Candidate must have a transcript GPA of not less than 3.0.

(Exceptions to these requirements will be made by the Program Committee and the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.)

6. Selection Method

Candidate is required to submit a brief proposal (3-5 pages) about the research topic that interests him or her.  Additionally, a placement/tele-interview by our program committee will be arranged if the candidate’s proposal is selected.

7. Academic System

Semester system

Academic credits:

The number of academic credits assigned to each subject is as follows:

  • Lecture or discussion periods totaling 15 hours per semester - 1 Credit
  • Laboratory or practice periods totaling 30 hours per semester - 1 Credit
  • Dissertation preparation totaling 45 hours per semester - 1 credit.

8. Language

English will be used for instruction, written assignments, as well as the writing of dissertation and manuscript.

9. Duration of Study

Plan I : Completion of study must take no more than 5 academic years.
Plan II : Completion of study must take no more than 8 academic years.

10. Registration

Candidates may enroll on a full-time or part-time basis as follows:

  • Plan I Full-time:
    • Three years for dissertation
    • Students must register no less than 8 credits/semester
  • Plan I Part-time:
  • Four years for dissertation
  • Student must register no less than 6 credits/semester
  • One year for course work
  • Four subjects/semester
  • Two years for dissertation
  • Two to four years for course work
  • Must enroll at least one subject/semester
  • Two to three years for dissertation
  • Plan II Full-time
  • Plan II Part-time

Plan I (Research and Dissertation Only)

Students must meet the following requirements:

  • Pass an English proficiency Examination with a TOEFL score of at least 500 (paper based) or 173 (computer based) or 61 (internet based) or achieve an IELTS band level of at least 5.5.Pass the Qualifying Examination.
  • Complete a written dissertation and pass the oral defense required for graduation according to the regulations of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University.
  • Publish at least one research paper related to his or her dissertation in an internationally peer-reviewed journal.

Plan II (Course work and Dissertation)

Students must meet the following requirements:

  • Pass an English proficiency Examination with a TOEFL score of at least 500 (paper based) or 173 (computer based) or 61 (internet based) or achieve an IELTS band level of at least 5.5.
  • Complete course work with at least 24 credits with GPA not less than 3.00.
  • Pass the Qualifying Examination.
  • Complete a written dissertation and pass the oral defense required for graduation according to the regulations of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University.
  • Publish at least one research paper related to his or her dissertation in a internationally peer-reviewed journal

Dissertation

Credits (Theory - Practice - Self-study)

RACE 699 Dissertation 48(0-192-0)

The Dissertation can be a single, large study or a series of small studies. A single, large study can be a multi-centered RCT, cohort, case-control, or surveyed research. For a Dissertation which features a series of small studies, there should be 2-4 studies and each study should be related to each other. The resulting studies are expected to be published in international journals. Students can select research topics in their area of interest. The program will provide 3 supervisors or more, in which 2 supervisors should be a part of the program (e.g., Methodologist and Biostatistician) and the other supervisor can be a clinician who has expertise in that area of interest. Students are expected to work regularly with supervisors in developing research protocol until the study has been completed (i.e., paper published).
