Philosophy of the Program
This program is designed based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) to respond to the needs and align with the lifestyles of Deaf individuals. Learning experiences are organized in diverse formats, emphasizing a learning-centered approach through collaborative learning and practical experiences between Deaf students and hearing students, following the bilingual–bicultural (Bi-Bi) approach.
The program aims to develop graduates who are holistic in physical, mental, and intellectual dimensions, capable of constructing knowledge independently in accordance with constructivist principles. Graduates are expected to respect diversity, possess a strong professional spirit of teaching, adhere to professional ethics and codes of conduct of teachers and Thai Sign Language interpreters, and work collaboratively based on an understanding of the cultural differences between Deaf culture and hearing culture.
Program Objectives
Graduates of the program are expected to:
1. Be able to design learning management for Deaf learners by appropriately applying knowledge and empirical evidence related to Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, and Thai Sign Language in accordance with educational principles.
2. Be able to effectively perform teaching practices in learning contexts for Deaf learners.
3. Be able to use digital technology effectively to support learning and professional practice.
4. Be able to use Thai Sign Language, Thai language, and English appropriately according to professional purposes.
5. Be able to work collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
6. Demonstrate morality, ethics, and professional codes of conduct.
7. Be able to continuously develop their academic, professional (teacher and Thai Sign Language interpreter), and global citizenship competencies to remain responsive to changing situations and environments.
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:
1. Design learning management for Deaf learners by applying knowledge and empirical evidence related to Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, and Thai Sign Language in accordance with educational principles.
2. Effectively perform teaching practices in learning contexts for Deaf learners.
3. Use digital technology effectively to enhance learning and professional practice.
4. Use Thai Sign Language, Thai language, and English appropriately according to professional objectives.
5. Demonstrate skills in working collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
6. Demonstrate morality, ethics, and adherence to professional codes of conduct.
7. Demonstrate continuous self-development in academic knowledge, professional competencies as teachers and Thai Sign Language interpreters, and quality global citizenship to ensure suitability for changing contexts and environments.
Instructional Schedule
• Instruction is provided in both the regular program and the credit transfer program during official working days.
-First Semester: August – December
-Second Semester: January – April
• No classes are normally scheduled on weekends or public holidays as announced by the government or Mahidol University. However, supplementary classes may be arranged on weekends when necessary for specific courses, subject to approval by the Institute, and occasional instruction on holidays may be permitted.
Qualifications of Applicants
Hearing Applicants
Applicants with hearing ability must meet the following qualifications:
1. Be a hearing person or a person with hearing impairment who has completed upper secondary education or its equivalent.
2. Possess positive attitudes and appropriate characteristics for the teaching profession.
3. Be able to use Thai Sign Language for communication (for applicants with hearing impairment).
4. Possess positive attitudes and appropriate characteristics for the profession of Thai Sign Language interpreter (for hearing applicants).
5. Applicants with qualifications other than those specified above shall be considered at the discretion of the admissions committee.
Applicants with Hearing Impairment (Deaf Applicants)
Applicants with hearing impairment must meet the following qualifications:
1. Be a person with hearing impairment.
2. Have completed upper secondary education or its equivalent.
3. Be able to use Thai Sign Language for communication.
4. Have passed the assessment of teacher characteristics and meet the criteria set by the Office of the Higher Education Commission and/or the selection regulations specified by the College.
5. Possess positive attitudes and appropriate characteristics for the teaching profession. Applicants with qualifications other than those specified above shall be considered at the discretion of the admissions committee.
Career Opportunities after Graduation
Graduates of the program may pursue careers as:
1. Teachers providing learning management for individuals with hearing impairment.
2. Educational scholars in the field of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education.
3. Thai Sign Language interpreters.
Graduation Requirements
Graduation shall be in accordance with Mahidol University regulations on diploma and bachelor’s degree education. To complete the Bachelor’s degree in Deaf studies and Deaf Education, students must meet the following requirements:
1. Complete all required credits and pass all courses specified in the curriculum.
2. Achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of not less than 2.00.
3. Complete the program within the time frame specified by the curriculum standards.
4. Have no outstanding financial obligations to the University.
5. Demonstrate good conduct appropriate to the dignity of the degree.
6. Complete all compulsory activities as specified by the University.
7. Complete all teacher professional enhancement activities as specified by the program.
8. Pass the English language proficiency assessment in accordance with Mahidol University’s announcement on English proficiency standards for undergraduate students.
9. Pass the graduate competency assessment based on professional teaching standards, including performance standards and ethical conduct standards.
10. Achieve all expected learning outcomes of the program.
