7. Course Description: The elective rotation in Pediatrics Rheumatology is open to medical students and physicians interested in arthritis, connective tissue diseases, and vasculitis.
8. Objectives:
• Be able to perform musculoskeletal examination, including paediatric Gait Arms Legs and Spine (pGALS), Manual Muscle Testing (MMT8), capillaroscopy
• Be able to assess disease severity, including Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K), Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ), Childhood Myositis Assessment Scale (CMAS)
• Know how to approach patients presenting with joint pain, limping, prolonged fever (fever of unknown origin), and multisystemic organ involvement (suspected juvenile idiopathic arthritis, connective tissue diseases, and vasculitis)
• Describe clinical manifestations, making a diagnosis, and approach to treatment the following diseases:
o Juvenile idiopathic arthritis
o Systemic lupus erythematosus
o Juvenile dermatomyositis
o Henoch SchÖnlein purpura and other forms of vasculitis (eg. Polyarteritis nodosa, Takayasu arteritis)
o Post-infectious arthritis
o Acute rheumatic fever/Post streptococcal reactive arthritis
o Common orthopedic problems in children (eg. Osgood Schlatter disease, patellofemoral syndrome)
• Understand the role of autoantibody testing, including anti-nuclear antibody, extractable nuclear antigen antibodies panel, myositis specific antibodies
• Know the indication to transfer patients with rheumatic diseases to specialist
