7. Course Description: The elective rotation in Pediatrics Allergy/Immunology is open to medical students and physicians interested in allergic and primary immunodeficiency diseases.

8. Objectives:

1)  Describe asthma pathogenesis, fundamentals of diagnostic testing for asthma, and learn fundamentals of asthma management

2)  Define a differential diagnosis for patients presenting with rhinitis, rhinosinusitis and/or conjunctivitis including the natural history and common triggers of rhinitis, rhinosinusitis and/or conjunctivitis

3)  Identify a guideline-based approach for the treatment of rhinitis, rhinosinusitis and/or conjunctivitis

4)  Describe the immunopathology of adverse drug reactions 

5)  Understand the role of skin testing, graded dose challenge, and desensitization in the evaluation and treatment of patients with drug allergy

6)  Define anaphylaxis and biphasic reactions, describe symptoms typical of IgE-mediated anaphylaxis and define therapies for anaphylaxis, including dose, route, the onset of action, and indication

7)  Know the most common food allergens in children

8)  Describe the current evaluation and the management of food allergy

9)  Recognize clinical signs and symptoms that would warrant a workup for a primary immunodeficiency disorder and be able to choose the laboratory workup required to diagnose the more common immunodeficiency disorders

10) Describe the treatment options for patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders, including stem cell transplantation and immunoglobulin replacement

11) Develop a differential diagnosis for patients presenting with allergic/ immunologic skin disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and urticaria and angioedema

12) Describe avoidance and basic treatment protocols for immunologic skin disorders
