Contrast Media for CT

CT contrast Media

is the agent used to enhance the contrast between the target organ and nearby organs. It is opaque to X-ray used by the CT scanner. Its main ingredients are iodine and organic compound. There are 2 types:

  1. contrast media giving electrical charges (cheap)
  2. contrast media not giving electrical charges (expensive). This type causes fewer side effects.
Administered routes of CT contrast media
  1. intra venous (2 cc per kg of body weight)
  2. drinking
  3. via anus
Signs and symptoms of CT contrast media side effects
  1. nausea, vomiting, rash, pain, hot flash (Those will decrease after stopping the contrast media injection.)
  2. chill, fever, headache, dizziness, fatigue, hypotension, hypertension, itching, urticaria, sneezing, coughing, fainting (The severe case of fainting is quite rare.)

Radiologists, nurses, and AIMC staff are aware of those side effects or allergy. They are well trained to address the situation. Needed medicine, equipments, and resuscitation machines are always prepared.
